The biggest misconception of the music industry and especially to new musicians is that they can have a long term business model selling a compact disc. This is like backwards running. Major music labels have created this model over the last hundred years and it is very hard to get them to adapt. This system has created everyday artists like Sugar Ray and Janet Jackson. It is even proven for the new school of large pop acts such as Britney Spears and Nickelback.
For musicians, it is hard to justify having a business when your only product is a disc that your customers can get for free. We want musicians to have a full bankend of products to have fans continuing to buy from them. This creates a strong business and allows for elements of lifestyle design.
For most upstart bands this is not the case. Novice artists do not have a huge back catalog and are unwilling to spend money. Indie bands don’t like to go manufacture a ton of DVD’s and hats and have a ton of inventory.
Fogetting having a ton of boxes in your garage, the next great idea to add income to your bottom line while giving value to your customers is with affiliate marketing. Herein lies affiliate marketing.
At its core, affiliate marketing can be equalled to a referral program. The online pioneer of affiliate marketing was Amazon, who took their stock through the roof by letting their customers recommend great book and other items. Affilaites helped them grow to be the largest online retailer.
Bands have the ultimate opportunity to create a large backend by recommending products to their core fans. Bands are very influential, sometimes heard louder than politicians or tv hosts. You don’t need to start by selling hundred dollar items, start with Amazon or iTunes and sell a single or an album. Who wouldn’t like it if Katy Perry sent you an email saying she was in love with the new Pink record and here is a link to grab it.
Taking this to the next level would be to recommend music instruments, concert tickets, clothing and other cool aspects of being in a band. By doing so you are creating a bonded relationship with your fans. All you want to do is provide immense value to that they will appreciate.
The next time you are getting ready to launch a campaign, think about using affiliate marketing to bolster your online music marketing and your overall sales. You can easily see your stats, promote links, manage accounts and see how much money you have maid. The result can be extra money in your pocket and a more satisfied fan. Looks like a win win to me.
