Ants are very long-living insects able to thrive even in the harshest of environments in the world. An ant colony, which can have a population of more than a million , has 3 classes of “citizens”: the workers, the soldiers, and the single queen. Outdoors, ants are valued as gauge of changes in the environment. Unfortunately, the ants are considered as pests once they invade human dwellings.

Army ants & driver ants are highly developed ants. Army ants can be found in South America & driver ants are found in Africa. Unlike other species, these don’t have permanent nests. These colonies reproduce via two methods – fission or nuptial flights.
Weaver ants, on the other hand, are those that make their nests in trees by attaching leaves together. These creatures first force the leaves together with a bridge of workers & then they sew the leaves by pressing silk producing larvae on the leaves.
Ants with generally have enlarged bellies are called honeypot ants. They usually live in hot, dry places such as Australia, Africa, North America and they can be found in deserts as well. In some places, these ants are considered a great delicacy.
Leaf cutter ants feed exclusively on fungus and live only within their colony. These ants come in different sized castes to carry out several functions that are to be performed in the colony.
Ants that have a sac of poison are known as the fire ant. Their “poison” is known as piperidine alkaloids.
Lastly, one of the largest & most primeval varieties of ants are the Australian bulldog ants. Being of a primitive variety, they have only 1 chromosome.
